INTRODUCTION: GALILEO GALILEI: Galileo is one of the most important astronomers of all time, he had great ideas and made many great discoveries. He agreed with Copernicus (another great astronomer) that the Sun is the center of our universe and that Earth and other planets orbit around the Sun. He saw the sun come up in the morning and down every night, but he didn't think it was the sun that had moved. He believed that the Earth was rotating, making it seem like the sun is moving around us, when really, we are moving around the sun! Sadly, this idea went against what Aristotle said and what the church believed in, and the church got very mad at Galileo. But Galileo was the kind of man who never recants on what he believes in so he held on to this "unacceptable" theory of his. He also discovered that the moon has craters, proving Aristotle wrong once again (Aristotle said that the moon was a perfect sphere). He observed Venus, finding that it has phases just like the moon. He even found Saturn's famous rings and sunspots on the sun!
Here are images of things that Galileo discovered:

THE MOON HAS CRATERS... LOOK!

Proving that the Moon has craters disproved Aristotle because Aristotle claimed that the Moon was a perfect sphere, but since it had craters it wasn't a perfect sphere.

JUPITER HAS MOONS... LOOK!

Discovering that Jupiter has four moons that go around Jupiter was a very big deal. This discovery disproved Aristotle because Aristotle claimed that the only planet things revolve around is Earth, but Jupiter has four moons revolving around it so Aristotle was once again incorrect. He named the moons after the four Midici brothers, Cosimo, Francesco, Carlo and Lorenzo. He named them after these for brothers in order to impress prince Cosimo de Madici.

SATURN HAS RINGS... LOOK!

the blur is saturns rings :)

Galileo discovered Saturns famous rings! The first time he noticed them, he didn't know what they were but he soon realized that they were magnificent rings around Saturn.

THE SUN HAS SPOTS... LOOK!

Galileo discovered that the sun has what we call "sunspots". These spots disproved Aristotle because he said that everything in the universe was a perfect sphere, but these random markings made his statement incorrect.

VENUS HAS PHASES... LOOK!

The fact that Venus has phases supports Copernicus' geocentric model of our solar system. The moon has phases because it revolves around the Earth, the only difference is that Venus's phases take more than a year to be completed. So, the moons phases are a month long because it takes the moon a month to finish its revolution around the Earth. Venus's phases take more than a year to be completed because it takes more than a year for its revolution around the Sun to be completed.
